He was already a sparky, working in air conditioning, when solar began gaining traction. Instead of staying in a space he felt was \u201cpart of the problem,\u201d he wanted to be \u201cpart of the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He started studying solar early, got accredited, and built his business from there. That matters because Mark isn\u2019t talking from a showroom brochure. He\u2019s talking from years of installs, service calls, and real-world outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-dfe18df\" data-block-id=\"dfe18df\"><style>.stk-dfe18df {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-afb7e49\" id=\"panels-vs-inverters-where-quality-really-counts\" data-block-id=\"afb7e49\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Panels vs inverters: where quality really counts<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re comparing quotes, it\u2019s easy to get stuck on panels. However, Mark\u2019s view is refreshingly grounded: these days, panels are often closer to a commodity, especially if you\u2019re choosing from established top-tier manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inverters, on the other hand, are where quality differences can really show up. They don\u2019t just convert power; they have to do it day after day, safely and efficiently, without falling apart down the track. Moreover, when something goes wrong, it\u2019s often the inverter \u2014 or the way the system has been set up around it \u2014 that becomes the headache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Mark pays close attention to heat. His rule of thumb is straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHeat is hard on electronics. The more heat you\u2019re asking an inverter to deal with, the shorter its working life tends to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So while specs matter, heat handling matters too. If one inverter consistently runs hotter than another, it\u2019s usually a sign it\u2019s under more stress and that can show up later as reduced reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-332a11f\" data-block-id=\"332a11f\"><style>.stk-332a11f {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-8c3ebeb\" id=\"shade-myths-and-the-gearbox-that-saves-your-output\" data-block-id=\"8c3ebeb\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Shade myths and the \u201cgearbox\u201d that saves your output<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest homeowner worries is shading: <em>\u201cIf one panel gets shade, does the whole system drop?\u201d<\/em> Mark says that\u2019s a common myth \u2014 and it can lead people to panic-buy add-ons they might not need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What actually matters is how the inverter responds when conditions aren\u2019t perfect. When a roof has partial shade, the system has to \u201chunt around\u201d to find the best operating point and some inverters do that far better than others. Mark explains it with an analogy that\u2019s easy to picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cA good inverter adapts when panels are shaded \u2014 like a gearbox changing gears \u2014 so it keeps finding the best output instead of getting stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a smarter inverter can \u201cshift gears\u201d when conditions aren\u2019t perfect. As a result, you can still get strong performance even with partial shade at certain times of day, depending on system design and inverter capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-8e35682\" data-block-id=\"8e35682\"><style>.stk-8e35682 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-b54e312\" id=\"batteries-worth-it-now-but-not-one-size-fits-all\" data-block-id=\"b54e312\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Batteries: worth it now, but not one-size-fits-all<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, batteries were often seen as a nice-to-have rather than a sensible investment. Mark says that\u2019s shifted recently \u2014 largely because rebates have changed the maths \u2014 and he\u2019s even put a battery in his own home. Still, he\u2019s quick to bring it back to reality: whether a battery is worth it depends on how your household uses power, what you pay at different times of day, how much solar you generate, and what you want the system to do (bill savings, blackout protection, or a bit of both). As Mark sums it up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBatteries can make sense now, but it\u2019s still case by case \u2014 and the real savings come from using your own solar, not chasing the feed\u2011in tariff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-17a38ba\" data-block-id=\"17a38ba\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In other words, feed-in credits are a bonus. In day-to-day use, your battery can help power the whole house at night as normal. However, backup is specifically about what happens during a blackout. When the grid goes down, your system needs to be set up to safely \u201cisland\u201d your home \u2014 and that usually means choosing which circuits you want to keep running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mark puts it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBackup is a confusing term \u2014 what we really mean is: what stays on during a blackout.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why good installers plan this upfront. Many households start with the essentials: lights, fridge, a few power points, and the internet modem and then add things like air conditioning if the inverter and battery are sized to handle it. Meanwhile, heavier loads (like ovens, pool pumps, or hot water) are often left off the backup circuits unless you\u2019re going for a larger, whole-home setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway is simple: if blackout comfort matters to you, don\u2019t assume it\u2019s automatic, ask your installer what will and won\u2019t be backed up, and get it designed properly from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-f8a8513\" data-block-id=\"f8a8513\"><style>.stk-f8a8513 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-033cf05\" id=\"how-to-choose-the-right-installer\" data-block-id=\"033cf05\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">How to choose the right installer<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s one message Mark comes back to, it\u2019s that <strong>the product matters \u2014 but the installer matters even more<\/strong>. Or, in his words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGetting the installer right is more important than getting the product right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-116f793\" data-block-id=\"116f793\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">So how do you do that without becoming a solar expert? Start with a few quick checks. First, look for a business that\u2019s been around a while. Mark suggests at least five years, and ten if possible. Next, check whether they operate like a real business. Do they have an office, warehouse, or showroom? Or do they look like a \u201cvan and a phone\u201d setup? Mark\u2019s best advice takes minutes. Search the company online. Then look up their address on Google Street View. You\u2019ll quickly see whether they seem established.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, do his favourite test. Call and ask for after-sales support. If nobody answers now, you\u2019ll struggle later.
