Like many households, he\u2019s also got a couple of energy-hungry extras: an in-ground pool and an EV, which can quietly push bills up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar wasn\u2019t a last-minute decision either. Greg has been fascinated by it for years: \u201cI just thought it was amazing that you can make electricity from the sun.\u201d When the EV arrived \u2014 and a pool heat pump followed \u2014 getting solar simply became the practical next step.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-dfe18df\" data-block-id=\"dfe18df\"><style>.stk-dfe18df {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-33f2627\" id=\"gregs-solar-set-up\" data-block-id=\"33f2627\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Greg&#8217;s solar set-up<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg installed his system in 2021. He went for roughly a 10\u201310.5kW solar array paired with an 8kW inverter. At the time, he considered that a large setup. Because the home is single phase, he also sized it to suit what that supply could handle. What\u2019s interesting isn\u2019t just the size. It\u2019s the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg says the system has been \u201cabsolutely perfect,\u201d and he estimates it paid for itself in around three and a half years. He also shares a real performance snapshot that puts things in perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cSince mid\u20112021 we\u2019ve generated about 60 megawatt hours \u2014 and we\u2019ve used about 20 megawatt hours of that ourselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And when asked what his bill looks like now, he delivers the line most people hope for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAt the moment, we basically don\u2019t have a power bill.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, he adds a reality check. Feed-in tariffs and energy plans change. So what worked brilliantly in 2021 may look different today. That\u2019s especially true if you\u2019re comparing solar-only versus solar-plus-battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-e6d4158\" data-block-id=\"e6d4158\"><style>.stk-e6d4158 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-d612923\" id=\"the-habit-changes-that-made-solar-work-harder\" data-block-id=\"d612923\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">The habit changes that made solar work harder<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg\u2019s biggest lesson is simple, and it\u2019s one many people skip. Before you pick products, understand how your household uses energy. He puts it plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cStart with your usage patterns. Know how much power you use \u2014 and when you use it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, his approach is straightforward: do what you can while the sun\u2019s out. That might mean shifting the dishwasher or washing machine into the day. It might mean using timers and scheduling features on appliances. Either way, you don\u2019t need to overhaul your whole lifestyle to see a benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the key idea Greg returns to: exports are a bonus, not the main win. The bigger saving comes from using your own solar first, instead of buying that same energy back from the grid later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-16ec9b0\" data-block-id=\"16ec9b0\"><style>.stk-16ec9b0 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-156bdeb\" id=\"choosing-an-installer-the-cookie-cutter-warning\" data-block-id=\"156bdeb\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Choosing an installer: the \u201ccookie cutter\u201d warning<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg is clear on one thing: a good experience starts with a good installer. And the biggest danger sign, in his view, is pressure and templated sales. He says it like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe last thing you want to do is go with these guys that have cookie cutter systems\u2026 you\u2019ve got to sign today because tomorrow the deal\u2019s off.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Older homes often need extra work, too. Greg\u2019s is a good example. His system came in just over $10,000 in 2021. Part of that cost came from upgrading an older switchboard. His roof layout also meant extra mounting, risers, and cable runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good installer talks about those things early. Ideally, you\u2019ve had a real conversation before the quote is final. As a result, the quote should reflect your home \u2014 not a template. He also says a good quote should clearly name the key hardware<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cCheck the \u2018brains\u2019 of the system \u2014 the inverter and the panels. Don\u2019t accept vague descriptions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That matters because a line like \u201c400W panel\u201d could mean almost anything. It also makes it harder to compare quotes properly. When it comes to red flags, Greg doesn\u2019t hesitate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf they say you must sign in 48 hours, bin it and walk away. Get two or three quotes. Six is usually too many.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many options can create confusion. Two or three good comparisons usually create clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-343a731\" data-block-id=\"343a731\"><style>.stk-343a731 {height:20px !important;}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-e548f33\" id=\"blackouts-batteries-and-the-solar-is-useless-surprise\" data-block-id=\"e548f33\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Blackouts, batteries and the \u201csolar is useless\u201d surprise<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the biggest misconceptions Greg highlights. People often assume solar will keep the lights on in a blackout. However, that\u2019s not how most standard systems work. Greg explains it in a way that sticks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cIf the grid goes down and you don\u2019t have a battery, your solar won\u2019t keep powering the house.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason is safety. When the grid is down, systems shut off to prevent feeding power back into lines while crews are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with a battery, you still need to ask about backup configuration. Otherwise, you can end up with a battery installed, yet nothing backed up when the power goes out. Greg warns this is where homeowners get caught, especially if the backup conversation wasn\u2019t clear up front. So when does a battery make sense? Greg\u2019s answer stays grounded. A battery becomes more compelling when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you can\u2019t shift enough usage into the day, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you live in an area with frequent outages, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you want emergency power for essentials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f107e9a\" data-block-id=\"f107e9a\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">On the other hand, if you can use most of your energy while the sun\u2019s out, you can still get strong results without a battery \u2014 at least until your needs change.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-52fff94\" id=\"what-greg-would-do-differently-next-time\" data-block-id=\"52fff94\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">What Greg would do differently next time<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg is happy with the big decisions: sizing, product choice, and overall reliability. He describes it as a \u201cset and forget\u201d investment for most people, even though he admits he\u2019s the type to check the app often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His main hindsight lesson is surprisingly simple: plan equipment placement with the future in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019d rethink where some of the gear went, because adding a battery later could be trickier.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, solar isn\u2019t just about what you install today.
