A new building without PV modules is a rarity these days, and more and more people who own older homes are also opting to install PV systems. In the latter case in particular, the costs of the PV panels, its size, and its orientation aren’t the only factors that play a role. The cabling to the inverter, its location, the building’s structure, and historic preservation also need to be considered.

But let’s start by looking at the basics. The following list provides a compact summary of things to think about, regardless of whether you’re looking to install a PV system on a new or old building. The list also includes various links to articles with more information.

PV installation checklist

How big should your PV system be in order to make sense financially? Can PV modules be installed and put into operation on older roofs? “The good news is that even if older buildings are trickier to retrofit than a new and modern building, it’s possible to install PV almost anywhere,” says Anthony Moises, solar expert at Fronius International.

Besides all the aspects you need to consider with a new building, you also have to factor in the following to make your solar power project a success:

1. Is the building’s structure suitable for installing PV panels on the roof?

2. Is a suitable location available for all PV system components?

4. Is the building a historic site and do permits have to be obtained?

Structural requirements for solar panel installation

In the case of older buildings or particularly large PV projects, for example, the building’s structure will need to be checked. After all, a 10-kWp system including its modules and substructure weighs a good 750 kg. An inspection by an experienced structural engineer is essential, especially for old buildings (for example, if no structural analysis documents are available), for flat roofs, and in regions with high snowfall.

While the additional load from the PV modules usually isn’t a problem with pitched roofs, it’s still worth playing it safe. As the building owner, you are responsible for safety and may have to obtain a certificate of structural stability. This will cost between 300 and 1,000 euros, depending on whether blueprints are available or have to be drawn up from scratch.

A larger module array weighs a considerable amount, so it’s essential to check the building’s structure prior to installation

Suitable cabling from the PV System to the inverter

“To benefit from your own PV power, it needs to get from the roof to your household grid. This requires suitable cabling from the module arrays to the inverter. The latter is often located in the basement or in a utility room, which generally means routing cables over longer distances,” Moises knows from experience.

If your building was constructed more recently, it may have ductwork for cables. This is installed preemptively during construction in preparation for later additions to the household grid—such as PV systems.

The Fronius solar expert explains: “In older buildings in particular, ductwork isn’t standard. In many cases, the cables can simply be routed via an existing shaft from the attic into the basement and the utility room where the inverter is installed.”

If this isn’t possible, you have two options:

The most elegant solution is a concealed installation. To do this, you have to get behind the walls, lay the cables in the masonry, and then re-plaster. This approach is complex and more cost-intensive than the alternative.

The other option is exposed cabling on the wall, which is much faster and saves more in-depth construction work. However, this option has cosmetic disadvantages, even if the trained eye of a qualified electrician can usually find an attractive solution.

The situation is similar for e-mobility, because the only efficient way to charge an electric car is with a power cable. Laying a cable of this type from the meter to the parking space before installing an EV charger can be the biggest cost factor standing in the way of e-mobility in older buildings.

Efficient charging requires a high-voltage power connection where the electric car is parked

Remember: The PV system will need space in the power distribution box as it involves a separate circuit. In addition to the automatic circuit breaker, a separate residual current circuit breaker may be required. Battery storage systems and EV chargers also have their own fuses. It’s best to plan for these at the same time if they are to be added to the PV system later on. If the existing distribution box does not have enough space, a specialist company will need to replace it with a larger one or, alternatively, add an additional, smaller distribution box. The latter option usually involves less work and mess. If the existing system is older, however, homeowners will have to completely replace and upgrade it in order to bring the building up to the current state of the art and get it solar-ready.

Location for inverters and storage systems

Every photovoltaic system needs an inverter to make the solar power usable for the household. Depending on the manufacturer and model, the location for this device has to meet certain requirements. You’ll definitely be able to find or set up a suitable place in your building. Anthony Moises has some tips for choosing a location: “First off, Fronius inverters can be installed almost anywhere. The only thing is to make sure they are protected from direct sunlight. The ideal location is in a protected indoor area that is dry and well ventilated. This keeps the operating temperature in a moderate range and increases efficiency. For this reason, and because the inverter makes a quiet whirring noise while running, many homeowners put it in the utility room or garage.” If you are considering a battery storage system, you also need to create space for it.

The utility room or garage are ideal locations for the inverter and battery storage system

Installing PV panels on Historic buildings

Buildings that are on the register of historic places are a special case. Expanding renewable energies is a priority in many countries. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, for example, PV systems are generally allowed on protected buildings as long as the PV modules only slightly impair the aesthetics, but the systems are always subject to approval. The public authority responsible for historic preservation must review the permit but may only prohibit the installation of a PV system if the appearance and safety of the building are significantly impaired.

In the interest of aesthetics, in-roof modules with matt surfaces are often used, preferably installed on the side—away from the road—or on outbuildings.

Summary

You’ll need to think your PV project through carefully in order to get the most out of it and avoid unpleasant surprises during installation. Finding the correct system dimensions and orientation is a key aspect in the planning phase of every PV system, along with the location of the inverter and battery storage system.

If you want to retrofit PV on an existing building, you also need to think about the structural design, cabling options, and historic preservation.

In conclusion, it’s fair to say that PV can be installed on almost any building.

Don’t know how or where to start?
