Solar, Simplified: Three Perspectives. One Smarter Solar Journey.

Solar, Simplified: Three Perspectives. One Smarter Solar Journey.

Choosing solar should feel exciting. However, for most homeowners it quickly turns into a swirl of quotes, acronyms, mixed advice, and “limited-time” offers that don’t inspire confidence. That’s exactly why we created this series, to make solar clearer, calmer, and genuinely useful.

Solar, Simplified brings you three real-world perspectives on the same journey: the expert, the installer, and the homeowner. Together, they help you understand what matters, what to ignore, and how to make decisions you’ll still feel good about years from now.

Meet our hosts: Michael and Carlene Duffy

To keep this series grounded in real life, it’s hosted by Michael and Carlene Duffy. Known for their hands-on renovation experience and down-to-earth style, they first came to national attention on The Block: Glasshouse in 2014, combining Michael’s building know-how with Carlene’s interior design expertise.

They lead each conversation from a homeowner point of view, so the questions stay practical, relatable, and refreshingly honest. They don’t assume you know the jargon — instead, they ask the same “hang on, what does that actually mean?” questions you’d ask around your own kitchen table.

Meet our guests:

Episode 1: Pat — the Expert

Pat Pragasam (Fronius Australia) brings the big-picture view, what homeowners should focus on if they want confidence over the long run.

You’ll hear about:

  • Why data privacy and security are part of modern solar
  • What matters beyond warranties
  • Reliability and performance in Australian conditions
  • How solar is evolving with batteries, software, and smarter control

Episode 2: Mark — the Installer

Mark Cavanagh (MC Electrical) is known for being direct and testing products himself. This episode is the “real world” perspective: what actually makes a system perform well over time.

You’ll hear about:

  • How to choose an installer you can rely on
  • Why inverter quality is often underestimated
  • The role of heat, design, and installation standards
  • Common myths (including shade and performance)
  • What “backup” really means in a blackout

Episode 3: Greg — the Homeowner

Greg Spedding is a homeowner who’s lived with solar for years. He shares what surprised him, what worked, and what he’d do differently, the stuff you only learn after the install.

You’ll hear about:

  • What solar can — and can’t — do when the grid goes down
  • Sizing a system for real household needs
  • The small habit shifts that make a big difference
  • How to read quotes and spot red flags early
  • When a battery makes sense (and when it doesn’t)

What This Series Will Help You Do

By the end of the series, you’ll be better equipped to:

  • Make sense of quotes and product choices
  • Ask smarter questions
  • Avoid common red flags
  • Build a setup that suits your household now and into the future
